The session
Our sessions will be 50 minutes in length and can be every week or every two weeks at a mutually agreed time. I also offer monthly sessions if suitable.
Once you have made contact via text, phone call or email (see Contact) I will contact you and we can arrange a time to meet. This will give you an opportunity to meet with me, discuss what you are looking for and ask as many questions as you need. This first session will be charged at half price.
If the relationship feels comfortable, we will decide on a course of action. This includes whether you wish to agree to a set number of sessions or whether you would like an open-ended contract.
My therapeutic approach
I work in a person-centred way so I will be closely guided by what you need from moment to moment and I will tailor your therapy to suit your individual needs.
You may have a specific aim for what you wish to achieve from therapy and together we will work towards this goal. However, it may be that you wish to simply explore why you don't feel 'right'.
Some of my clients just need a confidential space each week to offload and ‘think aloud' to someone objective. We are so busy in our everyday lives that we can feel as though we do not wish to burden our friends and loved ones. My sessions will provide the opportunity to be really listened to.
I use a loosely structured approach for my bereavement counselling so that my client can feel safe and ‘held’ at such a distressing time.
In terms of other presenting issues such as anxiety and stress, our sessions can follow a prescribed structure if that is what is required or we can allow the sessions to evolve depending on how you are feeling and what has happened since our last meeting.
Some of my clients like to be provided with hard-copy information about their issues and I can suggest reading material and tasks. This will all be discussed in our first session.
Counselling Techniques that I may use to help you include:
CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)
Psycho-education information
Self-help strategies
Sand-tray therapy
Guided imagery
Attachment theory
Transactional analysis therapy
I work in accordance with the Ethical Principles and Codes of Professional Conduct of the Northern Guild of Psychotherapy.
